Michael Greenhouse

Sustainability writer,
environmental advocate

About Me.

I’m Michael Greenhouse, here to help you communicate your sustainability mission and strategy effectively, and with confidence. I draw on many years of experience working with leaders at some of the biggest names in business – Bloomberg, EY, KPMG, PwC and more. I’ve written for numerous CEOs, developed research-based reports on issues driving the economy, and edited award-winning publications.

Now I’m focused on the ever-changing world of sustainability. Most important, I’m committed to helping businesses and non-profits solve one of the great challenges of our time.

My Story.

As a college student, I interned with Ernest “Chick” Callenbach, the author of Ecotopia, one of the seminal works on environmentalism and sustainability. Chick was a brilliant and generous person, and I left his office in Berkeley, CA inspired to be a writer-editor and an advocate for the environment and the principles of sustainability.

I got my first opportunity in the early 2000s when I worked with a family foundation that made grants to environmental and social impact organizations. I spent several years handling the majority of their editorial work and twice won awards for annual report excellence.

As editorial director at the Big Four accounting firm KPMG, I wrote the firm’s first social impact report; wrote and edited the firm’s International Annual Review, which featured KPMG’s sustainability strategy and key initiatives; and wrote for three of the firm’s chairmen, often articulating the firm’s sustainability and social impact strategies.

From 2017-2022, I led my own consultancy, Greenhouse Communications, focusing on three of the issues driving the new economy: sustainability, the future of work, and technology. I wrote several white papers on sustainability and social impact for Bloomberg; contributed to an annual sustainability report for Hewlett Packard Enterprises; drafted blogs on sustainability for Protiviti, a professional services firm; and wrote on decarbonization topics for Engie Impact. With Tensie Whelan, director of the Center for Sustainable Business at New York University, I co-wrote a white paper examining the country’s shift to a clean-energy economy.

As Narrative Strategist for BDO, a leading professional services firm, I wrote often about sustainability, contributing to the firm’s annual sustainability reports, and writing on the topic in the CEO’s monthly newsletter, What's Next for Business.

Now residing in the Hudson Valley in New York State, I have joined the Board of Sustainable Hudson Valley, which works with partners in the region to advance progress against climate change. As always, I am committed to carrying on Chick Callenbach’s thinking as an advocate for a sustainable environment.
